The Environmental Information System at National Botanical Research Institute is focused on Plants and Pollution. The Center started functioning in 2005. The main objectives of the Center are:
1. Creation of website on "Plants and Pollution" with regional language interface for easy accession of information.
2. To document information in the form of database, newsletters, reports.
3. To generate and disseminate information on "Plants and Pollution"
4. To respond to the user queries on the subject
5. To co-ordinate with the focal point for supplying relevant and adequate information to end users.
The use of living organisms, in particular plants, as indicators of environmental quality is at least as old as agriculture. The sensitive reaction of plants to the quality of their environment which may used for indication can be, for example, biochemical, physiological, morphological, or sociological. All these reactions depend not only on the factor to be indicated but also on nutrient and watering status, age, sex, heritage and concurrence between individual or species. Considering the enormous amount of literature published in the last few years there was a strong need to have a bibliographic database on the subject. The website on "Plants and Pollution" summarizes the wide field of use of plants as indicator/ monitor/ mitigator of pollutants.
