Introduction to ENVIS-RP-NBRI Centre

The Environmental Information System (ENVIS Centre) at National Botanical Research Institute is focused on "Plants and Pollution". The Centre started functioning as node for “Plants as Indicators of Pollution” in January 2003. This became full-fledged ENVIS Centre in January 2005.
A wide range of chemical constituent enter the air, water and soil due to human activities resulting in the elevation of their concentrations above the respective threshold. A number of physiochemical methods are available to measure the concentration of specific contaminants. Biological systems are regarded as best system for monitoring the quality of environment, they show an integrated response to contamination and other changing environmental factors.
Among various organism, plants serve as an effective indicator/ monitor of air, water and soil pollution because of following characteristics:
  1. Their sensitivity to some contaminants may lead to visible injury, which can indicate the presence of elevated concentration in the environment.
  2. In some cases, tolerance to high concentration can be utilized in identifying contamination through chemical analysis of tissues.
  3. They have been used to relate dose of the pollutant to response of the receptor.
  4. They have been used to delineate the spatial and temporal distribution of the pollutant.
  5. Plants have been used to measure pollutant accumulation (like metals, organic, gaseous contaminants and radionuclides).
Plants are also proven contaminant mitigators/remediators, as evident in phytoremediation R&D across the world.
Objectives of ENVIS Centers
Long-term objectives
  • To build up a repository and dissemination centre in Environmental Science and Engineering.
  • To gear up the modern technologies of acquisition, processing, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information of environmental nature.
  • To support and promote research, development and innovation in environmental information technology.
Short-term objectives
  • To provide national environmental information service relevant to present needs and capable of development to meet the future needs of the users, originators, processors and disseminators of information.
  • To build up storage, retrieval and dissemination capabilities with the ultimate objectives of disseminating information speedily to the users.
  • To promote, national and international cooperation and liaison for exchange of environment related information.
  • To promote, support and assist education and personnel training programmes designed to enhance environmental information processing and utilization capabilities.
  • To promote exchange of information amongst developing countries.

Mandate of Host Organization

Mandate of ENVIS Centre

CSIR – NBRI

NBRI- ENVIS

To   undertake   basic   and   applied     R & D   programmes    in   several strategically   important   areas  of plant sciences  including conservation,  systematic documentation, prospection and genetic  improvement  with particular emphasis on under exploited, non-traditional and wild plant genetic resources of the country for the sustainable development and human welfare.

Systematically collect, compile and disseminate data on Plants and Pollution, which will be of immense use to several research organizations, town planners, policy makers, teachers and other stakeholders.
